Purling London’s Art Chess collaboration with artist Lhouette was featured by the Channel 4 television series, ‘The Great Pottery Throw Down’ on 15th January 2020. This show, hosted by Melanie Sykes, is a competition along similar lines to the Great British Bake Off, in which contestants battle for first place, by aiming to demonstrate their superior creative ideas and technical skills in order to impress the judges. The 3rd series of this show, started broadcast in December last year.

The programme contacted us to loan a 1 of 1, hand-painted Purling London Art Chess set to inspire their contestants during the chess set sculpting episode. After some deliberation the programme’s team chose the striking Art Chess set Lhouette x Purling London ‘More or Less – Duck’ inspired by Maximalism and Pop art. This set’s equally striking partner, “More or Less – Eyes” was exhibited at the prestigious and historic Christie’s Auction House in 2018.

The painting is designed to hung on the wall when not being played. The pieces are finished with 24 gold leaf, vibrant enamel paint and a deep lacquer.
Master potter Keith Brymer Jones and award-winning ceramicist Sue Pryke were tasked with judging the contestants’ Purling London-inspired chess sets.
