Negocio Exhibition

T. Raymonzrek x Purling London ‘Chemical Warfare’ Art Chess table was selected by the curators of Negocio Exhibition, June – July 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. The motivation of the exhibition is as follows:

Why use games as a way of commenting on or challenging politics, social justice and other issues?  In the current climate, where our liberties and civil rights are being questioned, familiar games can make for powerful means to subvert the world around us. Games can question social and political paths, and the decisions, actions and values of leaders. They can present interpretations of utopias or dystopias in a way that speaks with greater clarity than other channels of expression.

This exhibition, ‘Negocio’, displayed at the Casa de Cultura Sant Cugat was curated by Alba García-Martínez, Gara BM José, Carlos Izquierdo & Beatriz Martínez-Villagrasa. It presents work by artists who have used games as a means of reflecting and commenting on world social and political issues. The exhibits in this show demonstrate how games as an artistic medium, can be a powerful and accessible way to convey messages about power, politics, hierarchies and injustices.  As well as highlighting crises and global issues, some of the works also explore a new way of seeing the world and offer the viewers a chance to consider seeing issues from perspectives of both sides.

We were delighted that the ‘Chemical Warfare’ by T. Raymonzrek x Purling London was selected to be included in the exhibition alongside Yoko Ono’s famous ‘Play it By Trust’ and Natalia Carminati innovative ‘Pac Art’.

This engaging exhibition includes artworks which use ancient games such as chess, retro arcade and video games, and other indoor games such as pinball and table football. The works cross the boundaries of art and entertainment, in order to deliver serious messages and to comment upon political and social issues facing people around the world today.
