LA2 (Angel Ortiz)
LA II (Angel Ortiz) is an American graffiti artist, known for vibrant works, which demonstrate an eclectic mix of influences, including Chinese calligraphy, cave paintings and pop art. He was born in New York to a Puerto Rican family and lived on the Lower East Side of NYC.
At the age of 10, LA2 began taking to the streets in his neighbourhood, in order to make his mark on the city. He viewed the urban environment as his canvas. By the age of 13 he had caught the attention of the American street artist Keith Haring and in 1980, the two became friends and artistic collaborators. LA2 travelled round the world with Haring, acting as his assistant, as well as contributing to many of his older friend’s installations.
Today LA2’s works can be found in museums and collections across the US, including at Pepperdine University in Malibu, the Guggenheim Museum, NYC, the Museum at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC. LA2’s Purling Art Chess set ‘Fire & Ice’ was shown at the World Chess Hall of Fame’s ‘Keith Haring: Radiant Gambit’ exhibition 2020-21.
